Keep An Eye on:
Turnovers: turnover, TURNOVERS. Washington is currently ranked 11th out of 12 WNBA teams in turnovers per game, turning it over 16.4 times a game. In Thursdays loss to the Sky, the Mystics turned it over 24 times. Turnovers are a BIG reason why the Mystics are winless. No team can give the opposition extra possessions and expect wins to come. Washington HAS to clean this up if they’re to right the ship.
Rookie Duel: between Mystics rookie Aaliyah Edwards and the Fever’s much hyped rookie guard Caitlin Clark, the 2024 top overall pick, will be a battle to keep a close eye on throughout the game. Edwards is coming off a career night in the Mystics loss to Chicago where she posted a team high 23 points, game high 14 rebounds and 4 blocks on 10-12 shooting from the field. Edwards has been progressing at a good rate game to game and it’s beautiful to see. The one negative, free throw shooting. If Edwards can improve her 65.4 percent shooting from the charity stripe, it changes everything…not just for her, but the team overall.
Clark comes into Friday’s game averaging 15.6 points, 6.4 assists, 5.1 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1 block per game for the Fever, however, while there have been some positives in Clarks first 11 games as a pro, there have been some negatives as well. Clark is averaging 5.4 turnovers a game, shooting inefficiently (35.7% FG/ 29.7% 3FG) and has a defensive rating of 113.
Both rookies will be key for their respective teams Friday, teams that are desperate for a win in the worst way.
Mystics Vets: need to STEP UP!!! It’s no other way to put it. A rookie, shouldn’t be emerging as the most reliable player, while still trying to figure things out as a pro.
