Huntington Prep guard Keldon Johnson runs the show for Spurs at the 2017 NBPA Top 100 Camp
Once again the NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) brought it's Top 100 Camp to the University of Virginia. The NBPA Top 100 Camp looks to provide 100 of the top student athletes from around the world the tools to thrive at the collegiate and possibly the professional basketball levels. The education isn't just limited to players, the Top 100 Camp also has a special curriculum for parents geared towards creating positive dialogue moving forward for the players and their families. With the Camp also serving as a development event for former and current NBA players in the coaching, officiating and broadcasting fields, it serves as a ideal environment to teach those involved with the event, how to use basketball as a tool to advance their lives after basketball is over. With that being said, the Camp was centered around the action on the floor and the talent was unbelievable. Below you can see who stood out above the talented group of players on hand.
Cole Anthony/ Archbishop Molloy (NY)/ 2019/ 6'3/ 175 -
True Floor general is deadly in the pick an roll. Has a great feel for the game and is a natural leader, blend that with his sneaky but elite athleticism and you have the makings of a special player. Finished third at the Camp in scoring with 15 points per game,
Armando Bacot/ Trinity Episcopal School (VA)/ 2019/6'10/ 235 - Junior big displayed a strong fundamentally sound post game. Ran the floor well for easy scores (11.2 ppg), crashed the boards relentlessly (tied for Camp leading 7.7 rpg/ Camp leader in Off Reb with 3.1 per game) and was a steady inside presence for the runner up's.
Darius Bazley / Princeton High School (OH)/ 2018/ 6'9/195 -
Highly athletic wing with a skill set similar to former Kentucky star and NBA veteran Tayshaun Prince. Has a chance to be a top all around player at the next level and beyond.
Leandro Bolmaro/ Bahia Basket (Argentina)/ 2018/ 6'6/ 180 - Guard from Argentina plays with a flair and toughness that would make his country's living legend Spurs star Manu Ginobli proud. Fearless play maker who loves to attack defenders off the bounce, yet, is a capable spot up shooter. Key piece in the Rockets undefeated run.
Ashton Hagans/ Oak Hill Academy ( VA)/ 2019/ 6'4/ 190 - Highly competitive point guard is a blur in the open court. Hagans possesses great court vision, athleticism, is an elite passer and defender. Led the camp in assist (5.9) and steals (2.1).
Prentiss Hubb/ Gonzaga College High School (DC)/ 2018/ 6'3/ 170 -
Highly skilled guard that can impact the game in a multitude of ways. Hubb can shoot it (45% shooting from 3-point range), finish at the basket, a willing defender but his best skill may be passing. Hubb was fourth in assist with a 3.9 apg average.
* - Keldon Johnson/ Huntington Prep (W.VA)/ 2018/ 6'6/ 210 - Arguably the best player in attendance. Johnson went to work from the first tip and didn't stop until his team fell in the semi's. The high motor guard led the Camp in total points (135), was ranked second in scoring average (16.9) and was third in offensive rebounding 2.8 while shooting 87% from the free throw line. Johnson is a bouncy athlete, and once he becomes a more consistent shooter, he will be close to unstoppable.
Matthew Van Komen/ Pleasant Grove High School (UT)/ 2019/ 7'3/ 225 - Elite rim protector and capable finisher. Needs to get stronger, although he will mix it up when battling for rebounds and defensive position. Intriguing center to watch develop.
Scottie Lewis/ Ranney (NJ)/ 2019/ 6'6/ 180 - Tough, explosive, versatile wing who is a impact player on both ends of the floor. Ranked ninth in three point shooting (46%) and fifth in blocks (0.9) .
Jordan McCabe/ Kaukauna (WI)/ 2018/ 6'0/ 172 - Flashy play making point guard who set the table for the eventual champions Rockets team. Confident floor general has a game that reminds you of a Steve Nash and Jason Williams blend. Finished second in assist at 4.9 a game/
Luther Muhammad/ Hudson Catholic (NJ)/ 2018/ 6'4/195 - Best on ball defender at the camp. Muhammad who reminded me of Grizzlies guard Tony Allen, due to his ball hawking defense. A capable scorer, Muhammad cherished his role well and the sacrifice paid off with a undefeated run and a championship.
Anfernee Simons/Edgewater High School (FL)/ 2018/ 6'4/180 - Elite scorer who can get it done from all three levels with his three point shooting, mid range shooting off the bounce and spot up and of course, finishing at the basket. The Louisville commit will be an immediate scorer at the college level.
Immanuel Quickley/ John Carroll (MD)/ 2018/ 6'4/ 185 -
One of the more gifted point guards at the camp, Quickley added to his well known reputation by averaging 12.8 points per game on 55% shooting from deep, good enough for second at the camp. A cerebral floor general who can do everything that is required of a point guard.
Jahvon Quinerly III/ Hudson Catholic (NJ)/ 2018/ 6'1/ 165 - Quinerly III is another high scoring point guard. While he looks to score he can run a team and get his teammtes good looks from his passing. Averaged 12.9 points per game.
Andre Reeves Jr/ Brimmer and May (MA)/ 2018/ 6'6/195 - Fearless, explosive guard who can score with the best of them. Reeves Jr averaged 13.5 points per game which ranked fifth at the camp.
*- Simisola Shittu/ Vermont Academy (Canada)/ 2018/ 6'10/225 -
Man Child. Like Johnson an argument could be made that he was the best player in the camp by far. Averaged a camp leading 18.1 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. 6'10 forward with pro athleticism, all signs point to Shittu having an 82 game schedule in the near future.
Joseph Wieskamp/ Muscatine High School (IA)/ 2018/ 6'6/ 195 - One of the most efficient players at the camp. Wieskamp averaged 12.4 points on 61% shooting from the field which included a team high 19 points in the Rockets championship win.
*- Co-MVP
Best Team - Houston Rockets
