GW junior forward Tyler Cavanaugh finished with a game high 19 points and 6 rebounds in the loss to VCU
In a game that had NCAA Tournament implications, GW looked to sweep the season series against A-10 power VCU. The Rams had other plans as GW fell to VCU 69-65 in a intense A-10 battle. The Colonials were led by junior forward Tyler Cavanaugh's game high 19 points and 6 rebounds, while senior center Kevin Larsen added 15 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assist and 2 blocks.
Like in the first match-up at VCU, this game went down to the wire. With a little over a minute left in the game and GW holding on to a 63-62 lead, Rams junior guard JeQuan Lewis drove baseline and found junior forward Jordan Burgess open in the corner for the go ahead 3-pointer. VCU would never trail again as sophomore forward Justin Tillman converted 3 of 4 free throws down the stretch to close out the game. Sophomore guard Jonathan Williams scored 15 of his team high 17 points in the second half while Burgess added 14 points and 4 rebounds.
GW shot 42% from the field, 25% from 3-point range and 72% from the free throw line for the game while VCU shot 50% from the field, 38% from 3-point range and 80% from the stripe respectively.
GW will next host George Mason during the Colonials Senior Night Tuesday at 8pm while VCU host Davidson next Wednesday at 7pm.
