The Hall Calls For Two Local Hoop Legends

By Cardell Dudley

Friday, DMV basketball icons Alonzo Mourning and Gary Williams walked into immortality, as they were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. One a player, Virginia native and former Georgetown Hoya great who career spanned 15 years in the NBA averaging 17.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game for his career. However his charitable work throughout his playing career which continues to this very day is his most impactful accomplishment. The other, a Coach with a 452-242 record, who took the University of Maryland, his alma mater, to heights that the program had not experience before. All the while developing young men into successful well rounded adults, on and off the court. For the player, Alonzo Mourning and the former coach Gary Williams, reaching the Hall is a much deserved, welcomed honor for those of us who literally watched their respective careers unfold. Listen to both give their Hall of Fame speeches below.
